Champions praise Onslow-Cole

British Touring Car champions Fabrizio Giovanardi and Jason Plato have sung the praises of Tom Onslow-Cole, following the 21-year-old Vauxhall driver's double victory at Thruxton last weekend

Reigning champion Giovanardi, Onslow-Cole's team-mate, believes the Surrey driver can go all the way to World Touring Cars and compete on a level par with the likes of Andy Priaulx and Yvan Muller.

Giovanardi told : "I'm impressed. You can see the potential in Tom. He is not experienced, but he is already winning. It's very good, and I think the team has helped him to get better in not such a long time."

"I hope for him he can go to WTCC soon. He would be very competitive, I think."

Plato, who won the title in 2001, is another to have been impressed with Onslow-Cole, who now lies third in the points standings, even if he thinks the sophomore driver will find life a little harder next time out at Croft with 27 kilos of success ballast in his car.

Plato told : "Remember he's had no weight in his car in qualifying, so he's able to set himself up for great weekends by putting it on pole, and things will be harder now for him because he'll carry weight for Croft.

"Take nothing away from him, though. He's doing a fantastic job and I've been very impressed."
