Hamilton looking for Awards hat-trick

Lewis Hamilton will be hoping to make another piece of motor racing history tonight as he chases an unprecedented hat-trick of Autosport Awards at the star-studded event in London

Autosport Awards

The Autosport Awards are a series of awards presented by motor racing magazine Autosport to drivers that have achieved significant milestones each season. Some of the presentations are selected by the general public via a reader's poll.

The McLaren driver, who just missed out on the world championship after a sensational rookie campaign in Formula One, will be one of the main focuses of attention at the Grosvenor House ceremony that brings the curtain down on a fantastic 2007 season.

He has a chance of taking home three awards - the International Racing Driver of the Year, the British Competition Driver of the Year and autosport.com's Rookie of the Year.

Hamilton's closest challengers for International Racing Driver of the Year will likely be former teammate Fernando Alonso and world champion Kimi Raikkonen, who both took the title fight to the final round in Brazil.

For the British Competition Driver of the Year, Hamilton will be up against another title winner - with World Touring Car Champion Andy Priaulx a likely strong contender to cap his own season.

And the performance of Dario Franchitti in capturing the Indy Racing League crown should also make him a favourite among Autosport's readers who voted for the award.

Hamilton's third chance of success is in autosport.com's own Rookie of the Year Award, which he captured last year after shining in GP2.

His main rivals for that trophy will be Renault's Heikki Kovalainen, Scuderia Toro Rosso's Sebastian Vettel, DTM front-runner Paul di Resta and former winner Juan Pablo Montoya from NASCAR.

There are plenty of other awards up for grabs over the night.

Ferrari and McLaren will likely be head-to-head for the International Racing Car of the Year Award, while Sebastien Loeb and Marcus Gronholm will renew their on-stage rivalry to bid for International Rally Driver of the Year.

The night will end with one of the biggest awards for young drivers, as the six contenders for the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award find out who has come out on top. The winner will walk away with a cheque for £50,000 and a test in a McLaren F1 car.
