Rob Huff beats World Touring Car title rival Yvan Muller to Macau pole

Rob Huff took pole position for the first of the World Touring Car Championship finale races on Friday, after outpacing title rival and Chevrolet team-mate Yvan Muller in a thrilling battle for the top spot

The Briton was faster than Muller on both runs in the final 15 minute shoot-out - which had to be red-flagged early on when Robert Dahlgren crashed his Volvo heavily into the barriers at the Solitude Esses, with the car briefly bursting into flames.

Although Dahlgren was able to climb out of the wreckage unaided, he was later seen in a medical car with his arm in a sling receiving medical attention.

At the restart, Huff was quickest on the first run by 0.159 seconds but he had to dig deep second time around - and after brushing the wall at the exit of the final corner his effort was 0.268s quicker than Muller.

Gabriele Tarquini took third in his SUNRED SEAT with his final lap of the session, to finish ahead of Darryl O'Young in the Bamboo Chevrolet and Tom Coronel in the ROAL BMW.

Franz Engstler secured pole position for the second race, after finishing 10th in the first part of qualifying. He will start that race ahead of Michel Nykjaer, Huff, Coronel and Tarquini.

Chevrolet driver Alain Menu had a disaster, after an on-track incident with local driver Andre Couto in the closing stages of the session resulted in him failing to make it through to the second qualifying segment.

He ended up 13th overall - and angrily confronted Couto in the pits before storming out of the track.

Fredy Barth, who crashed heavily in the second of the day's free practice session, will miss Sunday's races after being retained in hospital for checks following his fiery accident.
