Tarquini on top in Italy

Reigning European Touring Car champion Gabriele Tarquini will start in the perfect position from which to defend his title after securing pole position for tomorrow's season-opener at Monza in Italy

The Italian Alfa Romeo 156 S2000 driver will line up alongside his AutoDelta Squadra Corse team-mate, young Brazilian charger Augusto Farfus Jr, who impressed on his tin-top debut, setting the second-fastest time, just 0.761 seconds behind Tarquini.

BMW pair Dirk and Jorg Muller will line up behind the Alfas on the second row of the grid, ahead of another AutoDelta Alfa, that of marque veteran Fabrizio Giovanardi.

Briton Andy Priaulx qualified sixth in his BMW Team Great Britain 320i, just ahead of the first of the SEAT Sport Toledo Cupras, driven by German Frank Diefenbacher.

Former Champ Car champion Alex Zanardi qualified eighth in his BMW, specially modified with hand controls, for BMW Team Italy-Spain, marking a successful return to full-time competition.
