Super Touring, race 1: Tarquini wins opener

Gabriele Tarquini scored Honda's second FIA European Touring Car Championship win of the year at Magny-Cours this morning (Tuesday), heading home series leader Nicola Larini's Alfa Romeo in the first of two races

On a wet but drying track, the Audi A4 Quattro of Roberto Colciago predictably leapt into the lead. He stayed at the front for the first two laps, and pulled away from Tarquini in the damp conditions. But the leader then slid wide at chicane and dropped to third, falling behind both Tarquini and Larini.

Behind them, the wet track helped cause chaos. France's Eric Cayrolle, who started second in his BMW, was one of a number of cars to get taken off, but he mounted a fine comeback in front of his home crowd, passing five cars on his way to sixth place.

Fabrizio Giovanardi, in the second Nordauto Alfa Romeo, rammed Britain's Matt Neal's Nissan into an early retirement, breaking the steering of the Primera. The Italian escaped to finish fourth.

The third Nordauto Alfa pilot, Romana Bernadoni, suffered an even worse race as she comprehensively rolled her 156 into retirement, but walked away uninjured.

Race two starts at 15.05 local time (14.05 BST).
