S' Touring qualifying: Tarquini's blast

Gabriele Tarquini blitzed the field at the A1-Ring to take pole for the first of Sunday's European Touring Car Championship Super Touring class races

His JAS Honda Accord was three tenths of a second faster than the rest of the field, and the Italian reckons his car suits the style of the 2.684-mile track in Austria's Styrian Mountains.

"The circuit is very good for my car," said Tarquini. "I had some difficulties this morning, especially in first practice because I just wasn't there.

"The track is not so easy. It's seven corners, five right-handers and it's quite hard to understand."

Second place on the grid went to the winner of race 1 last time out, the Alfa Romeo of Fabrizio Giovanardi, who stopped the clocks just ahead of team mate Nicola Larini.

The four-wheel drive Audi A4 of Roberto Colciago starts from fourth, while Fabrice Walfisch ensured that Italians don't lock out the top five. The Frenchman set the fifth fastest time in the second Honda Accord.
