ETCC race 1: No stopping Alfa

Alfa Romeo drivers Fabrizio Giovanardi and Nicola Larini continued their seemly unstoppable march towards the European Touring Car title with yet another one-two finish in race one at Jarama

Once more it was the BMWs that provided the sternest challenge, and in front of the on-looking Gerhard Berger Jorg Muller gained the lead at the start, which he kept through the early stages. At no stage did the German manage to shake off the marauding Alfas though, and it wasn't long before Giovanardi assumed his trademark position at the head of the field.

The Italian had the comfort of his team-mate between him and the BMW soon afterwards and he duly claimed his sixth win in seven races. Larini once more had to settle for the role of understudy, but another second place reinforced his position in the overall standings.

Local hero Luis Villamil was the only driver to retire from the race when his Alfa stopped early on. The Spaniard's retirement moved Dirk Muller in fourth, Alfa's Paolo Ruberti up to fifth and the BMW of Tom Coronel into sixth.
