WRC set to extend control tyre deal
The World Rally Championship is set to continue its control tyre contract with Pirelli for a second term following the revelation that the Italian firm is the only one to tender to the FIA
The original contract expires at the end of the 2010 season and the FIA had been expected announce the 2011-2013 supplier at the last World Motor Sport Council meeting in December, but that was stalled for clarification.
"This really shouldn't be a complicated decision," said an AUTOSPORT source. "Pirelli is the only firm in the running for the contract. We saw that when the envelope with the tenders in was opened last year."
Pirelli declined to comment on the ongoing tender process, but a decision is expected from the next WMSC meeting in March. That could be brought forward if the FIA elects to ballot WMSC members via a fax vote.
Specific details of Pirelli's bid have not been disclosed, but it the value of the bid is thought to be less than the €11m the Milan firm paid for the 2008-2010 agreement.
