Subaru aims for victory hat-trick

Subaru is gunning for a hat-trick of rally wins as it aims for world championship glory in 1999

After winning back-to-back rallies in Argentina and Greece, the team is making the long trip to New Zealand for this week's rally.

The team has an impressive record in New Zealand having won four of the last six events held on the traditionally wet and wintry stages.

Richard Burns will be hoping to emerge from the shadow of former Subaru legend and world champion Colin McRae.

'The competition is hotting up,' said Burns. 'I'm level-pegging in the World Championship standings with my home rival, Colin McRae.

'I'm also looking out for my team-mate Juha (Kankkunen), as he remains the most important person to beat.

'However, I won the last event in Greece, so I suspect everybody - from Tommi to Carlos - should really be looking out for me.'

Subaru has concentrated recent tests on gravel courses, with tyre suppliers Pirelli developing suitable tyres for the gruelling terrain.

Rally of Argentina victor Juha Kankkunen, who is hoping to build on the marque's recent purple patch, said, 'Subaru has made so much progress over the past couple of rallies.

'Now it is very important we maintain our winning form, especially on the rallies that suit us, so we can make a strong challenge as we get down to the last handful of events, this year.'

New Zealand, the ninth round of the championship, runs from Thursday to Sunday.

The first stage kicks-off on Thursday 0600BST.
