Stage three: Auriol pulling away

Didier Auriol has extended his lead with another fastest time on SS3 of the Rally Australia

He now leads Colin McRae by 3.1s, but the times are still extremely close and less than 13s covers the top ten.

Tommi Makinen is a close fourth, not enough to clinch his fourth consecutive title but a handy position to be in with so much of the rally still to run.

Possum Bourne's early retirement was the result of a camshaft problem, the Australian series champion being sidelined even before completing SS2.

Also in trouble is SEAT's Toni Gardemeister, who is battling with illness on this event. Suffering from a stomach complaint, he is currently outside the top ten.
