Stage nine: Makinen loses lead

Tommi Makinen has lost the lead of the Rally of Australia, after losing time in Stage nine.

The Finn has slipped down the order after suffering a puncture, and now lies fourth overall, behind rally leader Carlos Sainz, Richard Burns and Colin McRae.

He must finish within the top three if he is to clinch this year's World Rally Championship title in Australia.

Makinen's rival for the title Toyota's Didier Auriol has already retired from the event, after crashing on Stage six.

Toyota driver Sainz topped the time sheets in Stage nine with a 0.16.36.9, ahead of Suburu driver Richard Burns [0.16.41.5].

SEAT's Harri Rovanpera was third fastest ahead of team-mate Toni Gardemeister.

Ford driver Colin McRae was ninth quickest with a 0.18.13.7.
