Juha Kankkunen has stretched his lead to a little over 5s over Marcus Gronholm, but Carlos Sainz and Tommi Makinen were the quickest pair on SS11.
The top five are now covered by just 14.8s after nearly 190kms of hard rallying over some of the fastest and toughest stages on the calendar.
The fighting is just as close further back. Colin McRae is now in 6th, part of a three-car tussle for the final points scoring place, while the troubled Didier Auriol could soon drop back behind the impressive privateer Sebastien Lindholm.
