SS5 latest: Auriol and Burns close in

Richard Burns and Didier Auriol have closed in on 555 China Rally leader Tommi Makinen after the Finn struck a tree on SS5

Makinen lost around 20s but suffered only body damage and can continue. His lead has now dwindled to just six seconds however.

SS6 will definitely not run due to the adverse conditions.

Carlos Sainz has now drawn clear of Juha Kankkunen in the battle for fourth, while the two SEATs are running consistently on the edge of the points waiting for the top teams to stumble.

Further down the order, Jesus Puras is out of the rally. He had run in the top ten initially but the engine of his Toyota Corolla would not restart after service.
