SS21, Michelin TV : Gronholm wins

Marcus Gronholm may have finished only fifth fastest behind stage-winner Colin McRae on the final short section of Rally Australia, but it was more than enough for the Finn to wrap up victory down under and claim his second WRC win of the year

While the top spot on the Michelin TV stage went to McRae, 5.63km was never going to be enough distance for the Ford ace to make up the 10 seconds he needed to take third place from Harri Rovanpera.

In the end, McRae had to settle for fourth place and three points while his championship rival Tommi Makinen, who finished close behind in second place on SS21, came home sixth overall to take a solitary point.

Richard Burns remained as consistent as ever and set the third fastest time to comfortably hold onto his worthy second place on the leaderboard. However, the Subaru ace was pushed hard through the final stage by Harri Rovanpera and he had to share his third spot after the Finn set exactly the same time of 3m29.6s.

Behind rally winner Gronholm came Carlos Sainz in equal sixth place with the Subaru of Petter Solberg, putting the pair in eighth and seventh respectively. Peugeot team mates Didier Auriol and Gilles Panizzi were eighth and ninth, with the former taking the final podium spot in third overall and Frenchman Panizzi just sneaking inside the top 10 in ninth.
