SS19, Bannister North: McRae pushing

Ford's Colin McRae put the bit between his teeth on the longest stage of the leg, finishing the 38.84km Bannister North test half a second faster than rally leader Marcus Gronholm. In doing so, the Scot has cut the gap to Harri Rovanpera, the man ahead of him in the overall leaderboard, to 18 seconds with 35km of timed sections of the rally remaining

Joint-championship leader McRae is currently on two world championship points, but with title rival Richard Burns looking good for at least six points in Australia, the Ford driver will be looking to take as big a lead as possible into the final round in Wales later on this month.

Burns was third fastest through Bannister North and the Englishman is now 36 seconds behind Gronholm in the battle for the lead.

Tommi Makinen was next up, and Peugeot pair Rovanpera and Didier Auriol were fifth and sixth fastest on SS19.

Carlos Sainz cut the gap between himself and Gilles Panizzi to six seconds in the battle for eighth place overall after finishing seventh fastest on Bannister North.

Petter Solberg, Panizzi and Freddy Loix rounded out the top 10.
