SS17, Margam 2: Gronholm seals win

After an incident-packed Network Q Rally of Great Britain, there was to be no sting in the tail for either rally leader Marcus Gronholm or new world champion Richard Burns on the final stage, Margam 2, despite terrible weather conditions

The test that tripped up Carlos Sainz a couple of years ago was successfully negotiated by Gronholm, who was quickest in his Peugeot, and Burns, who was a leisurely sixth fastest in his Subaru. Harri Rovanpera (Peugeot) was third quickest to consolidate his runner-up spot on the event.

Didier Auriol ended his Peugeot career with the second fastest time at Margam, but he failed by 10secs to overcome the Hyundai of sixth placed Kenneth Eriksson.

The Swede's team mate Alister McRae also held off a challenge for his fourth position, and signed off his Hyundai career by scoring the far eastern marque's highest ever finish on a WRC round. His rival, Skoda's Armin Schwarz, was a second faster through the final stage, but it was nowhere near enough to trouble McRae's fourth place.

Bruno Thiry (Skoda), Gregoire de Mevius (Peugeot) and Toshi Arai (Subaru) completed the event's top 10.
