SS15, Penitencier Cot II: Panizzi, just

Peugeot's Gilles Panizzi fought back to win the penultimate stage of the Corsica Rally, but it is likely to be a case of too little to late for the Frenchman as Jesus Puras finished just 2.3s behind to hold onto his 30-second lead overall

Despite looming dark clouds over the mountainous French island, the rain held off and Panizzi completed the day's second running of the Penitencier Coti run for the 15th stage of the event in 15m08.2s with Puras second and Didier Auriol in third.

Auriol was only 0.2s behind the Citroen driver leaving the top three covered by under three seconds. Petter Solberg was next up in the lead Subaru with the Norwegian showing no signs of slowing down to let team mate Richard Burns through.

Solberg is fourth overall with Markko Martin in fifth while Burns is sixth, but the Englishman's chances of quietly moving up the leaderboard took a blow on the 24.05km stage as he was almost a minute slower than Solberg in sixth place, with Martin just 1.5s behind in seventh.

Francois Delecour was sandwiched among the Subarus in fifth and despite finishing ahead of Burns, it was nowhere near the 40 seconds he needs to make up if he is to overtake the Brit.

Colin McRae soldiered on to finish eighth fastest, moving the Scot up one place overall to 11th.
