SS15: Makinen breaks British monopoly

Tommi Makinen broke a British stage win streak which stretches back to the seventh test of the rally, by setting the fastest time on the last competitive section of the second leg, SS15 San Martin

Makinen completed the short 4.2km stage less than a second up on second and third men Petter Solberg and Alister McRae. Makinen was just 1.6s quicker than fourth-placed Richard Burns in the Subaru.

Colin McRae, meanwhile, kept on top of the game less than half a second behind his British rival in fifth. The older McRae still leads the way overall and heads into the final six stages on Sunday with Burns just over half a minute adrift.

Alister McRae's third fastest time brought a smile to the Hyundai camp after a difficult rally to date. The younger McRae was just 0.7s slower than fastest man Makinen.

The four time world champ's Mitsubishi team mate Freddy Loix set sixth fastest time in his Carisma WRC with Carlos Sainz and Didier Auriol seventh and eighth for Ford and Peugeot respectively.

Kenneth Eriksson set the ninth fastest time in the second Hyundai Accent while a struggling Marcus Gronholm finished another disappointing day for Peugeot by rounding out the top 10.

The rally resumes for Leg Three just after 1300 BST on Sunday.
