SS14, Parkkola: McRae stakes claim

Colin McRae stepped up his bid for a top slot on Rally Finland with fastest time on the 15.80km Parkkola stage as Harri Rovanpera kept up his blistering pace with second fastest time. The Finn is now up to third place overall and just 6.9s behind second-placed Richard Burns

Burns though had his best stage of the day. The Englishman's Subaru was third fastest, 2.2s adrift of McRae's time. Carlos Sainz, Markko Martin and Marcus Gronholm were next up, all within 1.4s of Burns's mark. That wasn't enough to keep Martin ahead of the flying Rovanpera though and the Estonian is now in fourth place overall.

Fightback men Francois Delecour and Toni Gardemeister were seventh and eighth fastest with Juha Kankkunen tying for ninth fastest with Toyota privateer Juuso Pykalisto. Gardemeister is now up to 17th and Delecour to 19th overall.

It wasn't all good news for Ford though as the meteoric young Finn Jani Paasonen left the road again in his Focus and this time he's out of the rally. Co-driver Arto Kapanen was reported to have "taken a bit of a knock," when the Focus hit a tree stump, but he is not believed to be badly hurt.
