SS10, Talvianen 1: Marcus on top
Marcus Gronholm made the first move on day two of Rally Finland, setting the fastest time through the bruising 30.30km Talvianen stage, 3.4 seconds ahead of Peugeot team mate Harri Rovanpera and 3.9s quicker than Colin McRae's Ford Focus
Gronholm immediately re-took the lead he'd conceded to Richard Burns late yesterday as leg two started badly for the Briton. A left-rear puncture cost the Subaru team leader valuable time and he completed the stage 15.4s slower than Gronholm. Burns retains second place overall 11.9 seconds behind the World Champion.
McRae's third fastest time reflects his continuing form improvement after a cautious start yesterday, the Scot remains sixth overall, 43.4s behind Gronholm, but he is now homing in on Didier Auriol's Peugot, which dropped to fifth, behind Rovanpera this morning.
Francois Delecour looks to have started to put yesterday' nightmare behind him. The Frenchman was fourth quickest ahead of Ford team mate Carlos Sainz, who continues his own recovery from yesterday's costly over-shoot. Markko Martin's sixth fastest stage time keeps him in third place overall.
Sebastian Lindholm was seventh fastest on the stage in his Peugeot ahead of Didier Auriol in his 206, Petter Solberg in the Subaru and Toni Gardemeister's Mitsubishi.
Burns wasn't the only driver in trouble. Local Jani Paasonen, the surprise star of the opening day in his Ford Focus, completed the stage with heavy body damage after rolling. He lost over a minute. Solberg also picked up body damage on the stage, and was only a second quicker than hobbled Subaru team mate Burns through the stage.
Juha Kankkunen suffered too, 50.2s slower than Gronholm thanks to low turbo-boost on the Hyundai Accent. Alister McRae was the quickest of the Accent drivers with 12th fastest time. The younger McRae also jumped up to 10th overall, from 13th overnight, at the expense of Paasonen, Kankkunen and Mitsubishi's Freddy Loix, who was out of the top15 on Talvianen.
