Service B - Imperia: Notes and quotes

Jesus Puras (Citroen) first: Reported a vibration at the front of the car on the last stage. He had picked up a puncture on the second and was driving on the inner mousse that keeps the rubber inflated

(Peugeot) second: "It's not bad but it could be better. I'm fighting the car a lot. We are using a new set-up for this rally and it still needs more work. I'm on the limit too much."

(Peugeot) third: "It could be a lot better. In the long [second] stage I was too much on the brakes and the pedal was very soft towards the end. When I get more confidence it will be better."

(Peugeot) fourth: The Frenchman is unhappy that Peugeot are not using a six-speed gearbox, having chosen a five-speed for greater reliability. "I am losing time with the five-speed 'box in the fast bits. If I had my normal car I would have been seven or eight seconds faster."

(Ford) fifth: "We are faster than we were in Catalunya, but maybe not enough. We have a little bit of understeer but I am pushing as hard as I can."

(Citroen) eighth: "One left hander on the first stage was very slippery and I went very sideways. I thought it would only spin but we hit a bridge parapet just behind the right rear wheel. That then spun us round again and we hit the front. Then the car was stuck between two gears and I lost a lot of time getting restarted."

(Subaru) ninth: Reported a small problem with the steering which was making it heavy going. Also said he was lacking confidence and couldn't get the technique right on the hairpins.

(Subaru) 12th: Stalled on the line at the start of SS2, but happy with progress so far.

(Ford) 13th: "It's not been a particularly good morning. I had problems with the differentials on all three stages. The handbrake's not working either. We should be doing the same times as Carlos [Sainz]."

(Mitsubishi) 16th: "The diffs are not locking at all - we have some electrical problem. Something was already wrong on SS1 and then it went very bad on the second and third stages. We're going home if we can't fix it. We're already too far behind."

(Mitsubishi) 21st: He has the same problems as Makinen. "We realised on the way here this morning that the diffs weren't working, but we couldn't find the problem. It's a new car and I've never seen one work properly from the word go. If we can find what the problem is, it could be useful for Corsica. If we go, we might never find it."
