Schwarz fit for Sweden
Works Skoda driver Armin Schwarz is expecting to be fit in time for the start of the Swedish Rally on 11 February despite suffering a dislocated shoulder in the accident that ended his Monte Carlo Rally a week ago
Schwarz blamed a sticking throttle and brake problems for the accident on the opening round of this year's World Rally Championship. His Skoda Fabia WRC hit a wall and then rolled into a ditch in the incident on SS7.
"I saw my physio and we worked out a way to get me fit in time for Sweden," said Schwarz. "I am confident this is possible."
The German WRC veteran felt that the HANS device, mandated for 2005, played a part in his injury, as although it protects the driver's head and neck in an accident, it leaves other parts of the upper body less secure.
"With the HANS system it is at present not yet possible to fix your upper body really tight to the seat," he said.
Schwarz was also troubled by his experience in Nice Hospital afterwards.
"In the hospital I got a little idea how it must have been in the Wild West, when the doctor brought my bones back into place without any injection to fight the pain," said Schwarz. "I never had such pain in my life - lucky me."
