Sainz promised 2005 drive
World Rally Championship legend Carlos Sainz has been promised a drive in the 2005 factory Citroen squad, should he decide continue competing at the top level
The 42-year-old Spaniard took his 26th world championship victory in the Rally Argentina, an all-time record, driving one of the French manufacturer's Xsaras.
"Our team for next year is signed," said Citroen team principal Guy Frequelin. "We have Sebastien [Loeb] and Carlos [Sainz]. Carlos has the place if he wants it.
"We will talk about his motivation for another year of driving in September. At this rally, though, Carlos has shown that he still has the same motivation for rallies as a 20-year-old."
Sainz for his part will not be drawn on his future: "I have to talk to my boss about this, then I have to talk to my wife - who is also my boss - and I also have to talk to myself about it.
"This has been a very nice rally. It's nice to win again 17 years after I competed on my first ever round of the world championship. I am still enjoying myself with the driving."
