Port Aventura service: Adventure stories

Jesus Puras (Citroen), leader: "I attacked too hard in the first stage and so the tyres weren't perfect for stage eight. Also, at a slow corner in eight I pulled the handbrake and the car stalled. It cost me about 10 seconds, but the car feels better on these roads today [generally more abrasive than those on leg one]."

"I had a little problem with the brakes in the first stage. Like yesterday morning, the pedal was long and it takes away my confidence. It was OK in the second stage."

"I'm beating Gilles Panizzi on tarmac and on that surface, he's normally the fastest in the world."

"We chose a harder tyre than the cars in front and I think it was a little mistake. There was more gravel than I expected on the first stage and it was a little bit cooler as well, but we still have a chance and I will keep trying."

"The first one was not too bad, but in the second the car started to become unstable under braking. Either something's wrong with the centre differential or the front of the car is too low."

"In the first stage after about 12-15km I got a big vibration from the left rear. It was impossible to see the road." [Delecour reported no problem in ss8 after a tyre change.]

"The car is running fine [after an overnight turbo change]. I had a go in the first one [to be third fastest], but even though I tried as hard in the second there was just too much gravel on the road."

"It's not funny any more, when I have an engine I have no gears and when I have gears I have no engine." [Martin has problems with the gearbox and the ignition cut-off switch.]

Sticking turbo wastegate problem on ss7. It was heat-related, so the Scot had to run with the anti-lag system switched off in ss8.

Overnight leader Sebastien Loeb's Citroen Saxo hit an engine sensor problem in SS7. Though it was resolved for SS8, Loeb has dropped behind Sergio Vallejo's Fiat. Manfred Stohl's Fiat has dropped down the order after the Austrian suffered a puncture.

Britain's Niall McShea is out of the event. He went over the time limit as his crew tried to solve a raft of problems on his Ford Puma in the final service of leg one.
