Mud stops play on SS6

The second run through of the Rally of Portugal's classic Fafe/Lameirinha stage, SS6, has been cancelled after stranded cars from the first run through and stricken gravel note cars blocked the test

Top drivers had predicted the chaos, with many two-wheel drive cars, including the Citroen of Philippe Bugalski, unable to escape from deep, mud-filled ruts on the normally dusty gravel tracks. Rescue vehicles have been unable to reach many of the stricken cars to tow them from the stage.

Heavy rain in the run-up to the event has made conditions the worst in living memory. SS5, the second run of Vizo, was completed by the top seeds, but a decision is awaited on whether SS7, the second running of Vieira/Cabeceiras, will be attempted.

Both front-wheel drive Citroen Xsara kit-cars are out of the event. Philippe Bugalski failed to make it out of SS3 (the cancelled SS6) after becoming bogged down in mud, while Thomas Radstrom rolled out on the road section between SS3 and SS4 avoiding an oncoming truck.
