McRae wins in Greece

After being the subject of controversial speculation about his actions during the day, Carlos Sainz finally honoured the agreement to stay in his original place and let Colin McRae win the Acropolis Rally

The Spaniard parked his Ford Focus at the finish of the final stage and waited two minutes until Juha Kankkunen passed him before crossing the finish line.

The delay was sufficient to let McRae past and take his second win of the season, although it means that, instead of a spectacular 1-2 win on one of the season's toughest events, the rally will be remembered for the antics of the Spaniard who appeared to be taking revenge for McRae's actions in Catalunya two seasons ago.

Richard Burns retired after today's first stage, but remains in the lead of the series and will still be at the top after next month's New Zealand Rally, such is his advantage.

The final big name retirement from the carnage of Greece in 2000 was Petter Solberg. He had set fastest time on five of today's final seven stages but broke his diff going into the final service halt.
