Makinen looks for sixth home win

Tommi Makinen could further cement his place in World Rally Championship history if he wins this weekend's Rally Finland

Makinen is looking for his sixth consecutive victory on his home event, and if he can achieve it, he will be within sight of his fourth world championship title in a row.

The odds are in his favour. This rally traditionally has one of the strongest entries of the season, but Makinen has still been able to take a relatively comfortable victory every year since 1994.

A quirk of the 1999 season is that the teams are all taking pairs of victories. Mitsubishi won in Monte Carlo and Sweden, Ford in Kenya and Portugal, then Citroen on the two tarmac events and Subaru in Greece and Argentina.

Makinen's Mitsubishi won the last round of the series in New Zealand, so if the pattern continues, a Mitsubishi should win in Finland. Seeing as his team-mate Freddy Loix has limited experience of this event, Makinen is in line to claim yet another home triumph on his favourite event of the year.

'I always drive to win,' said Makinen, who leads the championship by 11 points from Didier Auriol, 'but this rally is very special for me.

'It's always nice to be driving at home and I aim to make it six in a row.'
