Leg 2 am: Peugeot 1-2-3

As leg two of the Tour De Corse reached its mid-point, the podium is still looking like an all-Peugeot affair. Gilles Panizzi, who has led the event since yesterday's opening stage, currently has a 34.7s advantage over second-placed Marcus Gronholm, with Richard Burns in third and 10 seconds behind the Finn

Burns took revenge on Tommi Makinen on the fourth stage of leg two, regaining the third place he lost to the four-time world champion on the first of today's stages, the 36.73 km Petreto stage. However Makinen is just 12 seconds behind the reigning world champion with three stages remaining before the teams head back to parc ferme.

It was damp and miserable in Ajaccio this morning, giving hope for the Pirelli runners. Petter Solberg drove home the point that the Italian rubber performs better in these conditions by setting the fastest time on the first test of the leg. But since then the Norwegian has slipped down the order as the morning progressed. He currently lies seventh overall.

Meanwhile fellow Pirelli runners Colin McRae and Carlos Sainz finally began to get the best from their Fords on roads made treacherously slippery by persistent drizzle. Sainz fared better that his Scottish team mate and is now in the points in fifth place overall but, unless any of the leaders hit problems, it would seem that the battle for victory is being narrowed down to a choice between Panizzi, Gronholm, Burns and Makinen.

Ford protege Francois Duval had a puncture on SS8 which has dropped him to 13th overall while Freddy Loix reported a misfire on the first stage this morning and he now lies 15th overall. His team-mate Armin Schwarz is faring better than the Belgian and now lies 11th.

Toni Gardemeister remains the leading Skoda in 16th overall and Philippe Bugalski, who had a terrible and mystifying start to his Corsica Rally yesterday, has clawed his way back up the leaderboard and currently lies sixth overall.
