Leg 1, am: Panizzi leads the way

Pre-event favourite Gilles Panizzi showed why he's regarded as the finest asphalt driver in the sport by streaking away from the field on the first morning of the Tour de Corse

The Peugeot driver won all three of the morning's stages to establish a comfortable 13.5-second lead over his nearest rival, team-mate Marcus Gronholm. Subaru's Petter Solberg is the only driver to threaten the French manufacturer's dominance and is just two seconds behind Gronholm and seven seconds up on world champion Richard Burns in another 206.

The expected challenge of Philippe Bugalski in a privateer Citroen Xsara has yet to materialise, as the Frenchman suffered a mysterious problem on the first two stages that left him way down the order. However, his fortune improved on stage three, when he was second. This vaulted him up to seventh, just 2.5s behind Carlos Sainz and a points-scoring position.

Colin McRae is currently ninth in his Ford Focus WRC. The Scot lies exactly a minute behind Panizzi. His brother Alister McRae is back in 18th, behind the new Hyundai Accent of Armin Schwarz. Four-times champion Tommi Makinen is well placed in fifth, while 'fast' Freddy Loix is 13th.
