Higgins takes F2 win in rally
British rally driver Mark Higgins has taken victory in the Formula 2 category of the Network Q Rally of Great Britain.
The 28-year-old from Powys, and co-driver Bryan Thomas, took seven two-litre stage wins during the three-day rally to secure victory over Renault driver Martin Rowe.
'I'm absolutely delighted,' he said afterwards, 'and it's great to have won having been so competitive throughout.
'The Pirelli tyres have worked brilliantly and it just seems that the package has come together perfectly.'
The pressure was on Renault driver Martin Rowe on the final day of the rally.
His team-mate, British Rally champion Tapio Laukkanen, retired from the event after stage 18 with fuel pump failure.
Renault's hopes of winning this year's Formula 2 manufacturers' championship were riding on Rowe.
He managed to fight off Vauxhall drivers Jarmo Kytolehto and Neil Wearden to finish second in the category overall - enough to guarantee the French manufacturer a title victory.
F2 - overall results after 22 stages:
1. Higgins - Volkswagen - 4.15.37.0
2. Rowe - Renault - 4.16.47.3
3. Kytolehto - Vauxhall - 4.17.10.4
