Gronholm baffled by gap to Loeb
Marcus Gronholm believes he could be the reason why has not kept pace with double world champion Sebastien Loeb on the first day of the Rallye de France in Corsica
Gronholm was only five seconds behind Loeb at lunch, having taken the fastest time overall through SS2 despite suffering from a long brake pedal.
However, the Ford Focus driver now has a 20-second deficit at the end of the day after losing ground in SS3 and SS4.
Gronholm said he couldn't explain why he lost time to Loeb through the final two stages, and wondered whether he himself was fast enough to match the Frenchman.
"I dropped time to Loeb at the end of the first stage again this afternoon and I just don't know why," Gronholm mused. "Maybe it's the driver because I don't think there's anything wrong with the car.
"This afternoon was the first time I have used the hard compound tyres in competition and I didn't really get used to them. I wasn't happy with my driving today and now I have a difficult job tomorrow in trying to take back time."
