Calendar unlikely to be expanded

World Rally Championship Commission president Morris Chandler has indicated it is unlikely that next year's calendar will extend beyond the already published 16-event schedule

The World Motorsport Council recently approved 16 events for 2007, however, left the door open for more candidate events to be added to next year's championship.

This brought suggestions that the WRC could return to a selection system, where competitors picked the 16 events they want to compete in.

However, Chandler reckons that such a system being used is unlikely.

WRC event organisers, both current and candidates, are meeting with Chandler in Paris tomorrow, ahead of the FIA World Motorsport Council meeting in October.

"Although the WMSC reserved the right to add extra events to the 16 already named for the 2007 calendar, I do not think a selection system, in which teams choose which events they would enter, would work in practice," Chandler told the sport's official website.

"Organisers could end up with no top teams taking part in their event, which could be an embarrassment. My personal feeling is that the rotation system will come back into the debate."

The rotation system is where candidate rallies are alternated year-on-year to provide all proposed rallies with a chance of being on the calendar.

Chandler added that two of the events that did not make the 2007 calendar still wish to be considered for the future.
