Lydden Hill gets revamp for World Rallycross Championship

Iconic rallycross venue Lydden Hill will undergo a major facelift in time for Britain's first round of the World Rallycross Championship on May 24-25

The Kent circuit, which has been home to European Rallycross Championship events since the series returned to Britain in 2009 and is widely regarded as the home of the sport, is being redeveloped as part of a three-to-five-year plan.

The first stage of the programme is already underway, with the circuit's control tower - which has stood for over 50 years - being demolished to make way for a brand new building to house timekeepers, officials and VIPs.

Circuit owner and multiple British Rallycross champion Pat Doran said: "When you consider there are only five series on the planet that benefit from official FIA world championship status, these are really exciting times for rallycross.

"It is the fastest-growing discipline in motorsport and we are determined to take full advantage of that.

"There are some incredible venues on the globe-trotting schedule, including some built to F1 standards.

"The redevelopment of Lydden Hill will bring our circuit and its facilities right up-to-date and make it a match for anywhere else on the calendar.

"The bottom line is that rallycross is really on the up in 2014 - and so is Lydden Hill."
