Vipers to pull out next year...?
The all-conquering GTS works Chrysler Viper team is set to pull out of Le Mans and the ALMS series next year in order to concentrate on the development of the new version of the GTS/R for 2002
The Vipers have been the cars to beat in the GTS class and also notched up an overall victory at the Daytona 24hrs. They will certainly leave a gap at the top of the class should they decide to take a sabbatical.
"It's not yet 100%," said ORECA boss Hugues de Chaunac, "but it is our objective to start working on the new Viper so that we can be ready for 2002, or maybe 2003."
With the Vipers potentially out of the way for next year, the class will be there for the taking for the increasingly competitive Corvette C5-Rs. The GM cars finished second and third in class at Le Mans, behind the Oreca Vipers and are tipped to increase their effort in the ALMS.
"The plan is to win one race before the end of the season," said Programme Manager Doug Fehan.
The team always intended to compete in the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta in September, but may also attend the La Vegas and Laguna Seca races.
