The race is go!

The 2003 Le Mans 24 Hours has begun, with the two Bentleys leading the way, after starting from the front-row of the grid. Rinaldo Capello leads the way in the number 7 Bentley, with Johnny Herbert giving chase in the sister car

Jan Lammers shot up to third at the start in his Racing for Holland Dome, ahead of Jan Magnussen in the Audi Sport Japan R8. The Audi Sport UK and Champion Racing R8s fill the top five on the first lap.

The first problem of the race has befallen the GTS Chevrolet Corvette of Oliver Gavin. The Briton was forced to pit at the end of the first lap with unknown mechanical problems

After some heavy showers this morning, the track is dry and the temperature approaching 28 degrees, although thunderstorms are thought to be on their way.

Autosport.com will begin its hourly reports from the Circuit de la Sarthe at the end of the first 60 minutes at 4pm local time (3pm BST), but of course we'll keep you fully up-to-date with any major stories as they happen.
