Solberg in line for Oreca seat

Petter Solberg could make his Le Mans 24 Hours debut in a prototype this year after impressing the Oreca team during a test of their LMP1 car at Paul Ricard last week, reports this week's Autosport

The 2003 World Rally champion was left without a full-time drive when Subaru withdrew from the WRC, and Oreca team boss Hugues de Chaunac believes Solberg has what it takes to race at Le Mans.

"Before the test I was prepared to say that it was just a test. Now I am saying 'why not?' He certainly has the talent to race at Le Mans," de Chaunac told Autosport.

"Petter did an impressive job. He was very professional, he listened to the engineers and to the other drivers."

Solberg will meet with the team again in the next two weeks to discuss the possibility of a race deal.

"Petter wants a meeting where we will discuss the test," de Chaunac said. "I'm not excluding the possibility of him racing with us this year, although to be ready he needs to do much more testing."

Solberg says that he would like the chance to race at Le Mans this year.

"I am unemployed at the moment so I can say yes to whatever I want to," Solberg told Autosport. "Let's see what Hugues de Chaunac says. The team are going to look at things and see what they think, but yes, I would like to race the car. It would be good.

"I had a good feeling with the car straight away and had a lot of fun. I had no problems in the high-speed corners. The carbon brakes were the most difficult thing, but I got used to them in half a day."

Oreca also gave World Touring Car champion Yvan Muller a run in the Judd-powered Courage-Oreca LC70E at La Castellet , and the Frenchman is also in the frame for a drive in the 24 Hours this season.

"Yvan took some time to get used to the power, the speed and the downforce, but after half a day he had a good feel for the car," said de Chaunac. "Now he has to decide whether he wants to do Le Mans again."

Oreca also tested their new Judd-based AIM V10 engine for the first time at Ricard, with regular drivers Olivier Panis and Nicolas Lapierre completing over 1000 miles during the three days.
