Salo relieved after winning GT2 class
Mika Salo was relieved to finally claim the GT2 class win at Le Mans, after it eluded him last year
The Finn won the American Le Mans Series GT2 title last season but was frustrated to lose out on victory after enjoying a huge class lead for much of last year's event.
This time, however, the Risi Competizione Ferrari he shares with fellow former Grand Prix driver Gianmaria Bruni and Jaime Melo, took the lead from the Felbermayr Porsche in the fifth hour of the race and never relinquished it.
"I think we were supposed to win last year, but something happened," he told autosport.com. "We had a much smaller lead than we had then so we were taking nothing for granted.
"It all went to plan, absolutely nothing went wrong. We had some problems in practice and in qualifying, but nothing in the race."
Salo also says that victory at Le Mans makes up for the poor start the team have made to the ALMS season.
"We've had such a terrible season so far in America," he added. "Last year, this was, more or less, the only race we didn't win, so to win it now is a very, very good feeling."
