Peugeot drivers rue missed opportunity

The drivers of the No.8 Peugeot were left to rue a missed opportunity after finishing fifth in the Le Mans 24 Hours despite having the fastest car for most of the race

Stephane Sarrazin qualified the car on pole position and it led for the first two hours before a gearbox problem left it 12 laps behind the front runners.

Sarrazin, Pedro Lamy, and Alex Wurz charged back to fifth place, despite losing a further 10 minutes when the battery had to be replaced, and Sarrazin set the fastest lap of the race on the way.

The Frenchman is frustrated that they could have won the race, had it not been for the reliability problems.

"We were the fastest car over the weekend but we just had too many problems with it," he told autosport.com. "We lost the possibility to win because we had to change too many pieces, the gearbox, the battery, it's difficult.

"I'm very disappointed because our target was to win and we didn't achieve that, so it's a shame. But we did a very strong job and I hope I will be back next year, I hope I can win here one day."

Wurz agreed with his teammate's sentiment but says he still loves Le Mans.

"We were the fastest, each one of us set the fastest laps of all at the time, but we had more and more problems," he told autosport.com.

"It wasn't really our weekend, but that's Le Mans. That's what it is and that's why I love it.

"But I came here with a 100 per cent success rate and now I'm down to 50 per cent, so that sucks! But I hope I'll be back next year to improve it again."
