News from first session of final qualifying

2100CET First session ends and the BMW of JJ Lehto improves again, moving up to third, and the Mercedes of Bernd Schneider moves into fourth

Top 10 at the end of the first session:
Toyota (1), Toyota (2), BMW (17), Mercedes (6), Panoz (12), Mercedes (5), Toyota (3), BMW (15), Audi (7), Mercedes (4).

2055CET With five minutes of the first session Rinaldo Capelli sets his fastest time in the Audi - 3:34.891(ninth), as does the Ferrari of Jerome Policand - 3:38.468 (14th)

2049CET The Panoz of Jan Magnussen goes out for the first time. The team's other car has not been on the track yet.

2046CET The BMW of JJ Lehto moves up to fourth after setting a time of 3:32.086.
Mercedes Mark Webber, who crashed earlier in the session, has been taken to hospital compalining of neck and back pains.

2040 CET The Audi car of Michele Alboreto, Rinaldo Capello and Laurent Aiello set the 10th fastest time. Nissan (Jan Magnussen, Johnny O'Connell, Max Angelelli), Audi (Emanuele Pirro, Frank Biela, Didier Theys) and the Lola of Christophe Tinseau, Franck Montagny and Didier Terrien, recorded their fastest times to place 11th, 12th and 13th respectively.

2020 CET Bernd Schneider, driving a Mercedes CLR, records the third fastest qualifying time. The Panoz cars have yet to emerge from the garage.

1939 CET: The Riley & Scott of Yorijo Terada has gone off on the rundown between Mulsanne and Indianapolis, and the Mercedes of Mark Webber has also crashed.

1920CET: After 20 minutes of the first session of final qualifying only the Nissan of Satoshi Motoyama has improved on yesterday's time, and now lies 12th.
