McRae reviews his first stint
Former World Rally Champion Colin McRae had a mixed first driving stint at Le Mans. The Scot entered the fray engaged in a battle for the class lead with the Chevrolet Corvette C5-R of Jan Magnussen, and impressed with some consistently fast lap times. But a late spin lost him some ground. McRae spoke to Autosport's David Evans shortly after clambering out of his car
"I had a half-spin at the Mulsanne corner. There was a prototype car coming up the inside of me, so I moved just off the line and braked on a different part of the road. The car ran wide into the corner and once it was on the dirty stuff that was it. I tried to spin the car round on the throttle, but wasn't aggressive enough and the clutch was damaged."
"Yes. As soon as I was pulling away after the spin, the clutch started to slip. I thought it might be okay, but about three laps later it was getting worse so I had to come in. The team are changing the clutch now."
"It's good. The first stint went well, no problems. We came in for fuel and everything was fine. I'm probably driving at about 90 per cent. There's a bit more to come when you can get a clean lap, but how hard you go is down to the traffic really."
"Darren [Turner] is going to do a stint next, then I'm back in the car."
"No. I've driven the car in the dark before, it'll be fine."
