Extreme Speed LMP2 team switches to World Endurance Championship

The US Extreme Speed Motorsports LMP2 squad has firmed up its plans to enter the World Endurance Championship in 2015

Tequila Patron-sponsored ESM, which took part in the Austin and Shanghai rounds to test the waters in the series, has filed entries for its pair of new HPD-Honda ARX-04a coupes in the full WEC, which includes the Le Mans 24 Hours.

The switch from the Tudor United SportsCar Championship, in which Patron sponsors the North American Endurance Cup made up of the four enduros, is a result of the marketing opportunities offered by a global championship, according to team co-owner and Patron boss Ed Brown.

"Tequila Patron is thrilled to introduce its brand to consumers all over the world and on the WEC stage — that's the major reason we've moved in this direction as a team," he said.

The two ARX-04s, the first of which is scheduled to test this month, will be raced by team regulars Brown, fellow ESM co-owner Scott Sharp, Ryan Dalziel and Johannes van Overbeek.

Additional drivers will be announced at a later date.

WEC boss Gerard Neveu said he was "delighted that one of the top sportscar teams in the US has chosen to join the WEC family as a full participant in 2015".

ESM has yet to reveal its TUSC plans for next season, although it stated on the announcement of its Shanghai entry in September that it would contest the opening two rounds at Daytona and Sebring.
