Audi drivers concede pole to Peugeot

Audi stars Tom Kristensen and Frank Biela have conceded the fight for pole position at the Le Mans 24 Hours after the first session this evening

The best Audi time, set by Kristensen, was almost seven seconds slower than the provisional pole time set by the Peugeot 908 of Stephane Sarrazin. The seven-time Le Mans winner was slower than all three 908s and now believes pole is beyond Audi's reach.

"It's impressive, but it's not surprising," said Kristensen of the Peugeot's pace. "We weren't going for times [in session one], but we won't get those times."

Biela, whose No. 1 Audi is sixth fastest, also admitted Audi cannot compete with Peugeot on raw pace.

"We all know how strong Peugeot is," he said. "At the moment they are a bit too strong.

"The only thing we can count on is reliability and consistency. It's going to be very tough."

Biela confirmed that Audi would only focus on race set-up. "We'll concentrate on getting a good set-up for the race," he said. "No-one is going to fight for one lap."

Poor weather is expected for tomorrow's session, so any improvements are likely to come in tonight's session.
