8hrs: No change at the top

It is still stalemate at the top of the order in the Le Mans 24 hours. The last hour has been Johnny Herbert versus Rinaldo Capello, but the two have prove to be evenly matched. No driver on either team is showing a weakness, so it may now take something special for the Team Goh R8 to get back on the same lap as the Audi UK car.

Emanuele Pirro has handed over the Champion Audi to JJ Lehto as it continues to work its way back into the top six. It's looming behind the GTS leaders now, and looks set to put them back in their place in the hour to come.

In GTS, Olivier Beretta has set a cracking pace, with the car's fastest lap of the race during the hour. The gap between his Corvette (shared with Jan Magnussen and Oliver Gavin) and the chasing Ferrari (Tomas Enge/Peter Kox/Alain Menu) is now just over two minutes. Kox handed over to star driver Enge during the hour.

The second Prodrive car continues to have its problems, most recently with a spin by Darren Turner in the Dunlop Chicane. It did not cost the Briton a lot of time, but was hardly a help for a car that was already playing catchup.

"It was a very disappointing way to finish a good run for me," said Turner. "There was a problem on the downshift. But the car looks really good otherwise."

The only other incident in the hour was Chris Dyson losing the Dome-Judd into a gravel trap. This lost the troubled Racing for Holland car more time, but it eventually made it back to the pits.

Allan McNish is reported to have left hospital following his earlier accident in the Audi R8. His team-mates Frank Biela and Pierre Kaffer are still running with the repaired car.
