21hrs: Dindo feels heat

The 2004 Le Mans 24 Hours refuses to follow the script... After the dramas in the GTS battle during the last hour, this time it was the turn of overall leader Rinaldo Capello to feel the heat. Quite literally in fact, as the Italian was forced to pit to put out a small fire in the cockpit of his Team Goh Audi R8

Capello got an oversplash of fuel during his pitstop, which then ignited on his outlap. But the Italian remained calm and stopped the car while his team put the fire out. This could have cost the team more time, but the pursuing Veloqx Audi, being driven by Jamie Davies and led for so long before its suspension problems, also had extra time in the pit to remove an onboard camera which had come loose.

At the turn of the hour there is just 1m25s separating the two cars and both drivers are pushing very, very hard indeed, as they exchange fastest lap times.

Emanuele Pirro, in the third-placed Audi, also spent extra time in the Champion pits with a stuck front right wheel. But the Italian is ten laps off the lead, and has a five lap advantage over the fourth-placed Pescorolo, so is really in no danger of effecting the overall order now.

Pierre Kaffer, in the sister Veloqx car that was completely rebuilt after McNish's 170mph crash yesterday, is now running a remarkable fifth but even this car's run was not without drama as he was forced on to the grass while lapping a backmarker.

The front splitter damage to Alain Menu's Prodrive Ferrari has allowed Jan Magnussen to stretch his lead in the GTS category. The Corvette is now some 50s clear of the 550 Maranello.
