18hrs: Audis fill top three

Eric Comas handed over the Pescarolo car to Benoit Treluyer, who promptly had an accident on his out lap when he went flying over the kerbs at one of the Mulsanne chicanes and hit the barrier. The car was towed out, given a quick once-over in the pits and sent back out, but third place had already been lost.

The Pescarolo-Judd halted at the end of pitlane with an electronic issue, but the problem was addressed by his mechanics. But there are concerns about whether it was legal to work on the car away from its pit box. For the time being, it is running in fourth, with a five-lap cushion over its sister car.

Tom Kristensen still leads in the Team Goh Audi, but tyre concerns have meant a couple of unscheduled stops for the car. The leading pair are now back in sync as a result of Kristensen's short stints, and the gap is down to about a minute and a half.

In GTS, the Peter Kox/Tomas Enge/Alain Menu Prodrive Ferrari that won last year is still leading comfortably ahead of the Corvette. Although Oliver Gavin has made small inroads, the five-lap gap is too big for it to think of taking the lead without a problem for the 550 Maranello.
