Guillaume Moreau targets 2014 return to action

Moreau, who is back at a race meeting for the first time at this weekend's Spa World Endurance Championship round, is still undergoing rehabilitation for the injuries sustained aboard his OAK Pescarolo-Judd 01 LMP1 prototype in June 2012.

He damaged his 12th vertebra and compressed his spinal cord in the accident at the end of the Porsche Curves.

The 30-year-old told AUTOSPORT that he hopes to be fit enough to resume a career that includes five starts at the Le Mans 24 Hours and victories in Formula Renault 3.5 and the Formula 3 Euro Series in time for the beginning of next season.

"I hope to race again and I will do everything possible to come back," he said. "I am normally not very patient, but I know I have to take my time.

"I am not strong enough in my legs and feet for it to be possible for me to race this year; I couldn't brake hard enough."

Moreau explained that he was still undergoing intense rehabilitation in his quest to race again.

"Each day I spend half of the day on rehabilitation and I am doing a lot of training," he said, "but right now I cannot run or ride a bike because I lack sensitivity in my feet."

One of the final stages of his recuperation will take place in December or January when he has an operation to remove the metal bracing in his back.

Moreau revealed that he was given only a 20 per cent chance of walking again in the immediate aftermath of the accident.

"I know I am lucky," he said. "Motorsport is important to me, but so is being able to lead a normal life."

Moreau is basing himself with OAK at Spa this weekend and will also be present with the team at Le Mans next month.
