Tander wins again in race two
Toll HSV's Garth Tander has taken victory in race two of this weekend's V8 Supercar Challenge on the streets of Surfers Paradise
Tander made a superb start and apart from a few laps during the compulsory pit stop shuffle. led from start to finish. In second place was Team Vodafone's Jamie Whincup who always looked like finishing there apart from a mid-race hiccup.
After emerging from his pit stop ahead of teammate Craig Lowndes, he accidentally flicked on the pit lane speed limiter, allowing Lowndes past. But two laps later Lowndes spun towards the end of the lap, handing the place back to him.
Third was Russell Ingall, who had another dice with Tasman Motorsport's Greg Murphy, both drivers finishing one place further up the order than in race one.
A superb drive by Steven Richards in his Ford Performance Racing Falcon saw him take fifth place after starting the race in 25th after his disaster in race one, with namesake Jason Richards finishing sixth.
Jason Bargwanna won a tight battle with Mark Skaife for seventh place, as Holden Racing Team driver Skaife made up some of the ground he had lost earlier in the weekend.
It was not good news for everyone though. James Courtney looked set for a top five result until a penalty for speeding in pit lane dropped him down the order. Rick Kelly also looked like a possible top five runner, but a stuck throttle sent him down an escape road.
Instead of a top five result, they finished 15th and 16th, with Mark Winterbottom right on Kelly's tail, was recovering from down the grid for the second day in a row as well as being given a mechanical black flag to repair a 'damaged' rear bumper.
However, their day looked good compared to the result for Craig Lowndes. After running fourth in the early laps, he gained a place when Whincup made his 'error', before handing it back and more when he then spun.
Worse was to come when he was fighting Jason Richards, making an error at the esses around the back of the circuit and losing two places instead of gaining one. He also hit the wall on the exit of the chicane around this point in the race.
Somewhere in all this his rear bumper suffered damage, and though it appeared extremely minor, he was somewhat controversially given a mechanical black flag for it and thus when he pitted for repairs he dropped from eighth way down the order, finishing in 24th position, well outside the points.
Remarkably, he could've finished further down the order, as officials were considering giving him another mechanical black flag in the final laps as they were not happy the 'repairs' had fixed the 'damage', but they decided to let him continue.
