Courtney takes Winton race one pole

Jim Beam Racing's James Courtney set the fastest-ever time by a V8 Supercar to take pole position for the first race of this weekend's event at Winton Motor Raceway in country Victoria

Courtney was second-fastest going into the shootout but put a stunning lap together to secure pole position, knocking Tander off top spot. Tander had been lucky to make the shootout in the first place, going off with less than two minutes remaining in the qualifying session before putting together a time which got him into the shootout.

Two Ford Performance Racing cars line up on the second row, Mark Winterbottom ahead of Steven Richards, with a pair of Team Vodafone cars on the third row, Craig Lowndes ahead of Jamie Whincup, who had been fastest before dropping five places in the shootout.

The second HRT car of Will Davison lines up seventh, with Steven Johnson, Todd Kelly and Michael Caruso completing the top ten.

After strong race results at the previous round, Shane van Gisbergen was only able to qualify in 15th place, two places behind Rick Kelly. However, they had a better day than Greg Murphy and Russell Ingall, who will start from 24th and 25th places on the grid.
