Will Davison recovers from Saturday disaster with V8 Supercars race two win at Barbagallo

Will Davison regained some ground on Jamie Whincup in the V8 Supercars title race by winning round eight of the 2012 series at Barbagallo

Ford Performance Racing driver Davison had lost the championship lead to Whincup (Triple Eight Holden) on Saturday, when the Ford man was delayed in a first-lap crash and Whincup finished second to Davison's team-mate Mark Winterbottom.

Whincup started from pole for the second of the weekend's three races on Sunday morning, but Davison was the only one of the frontrunners to start on soft tyres, and he made the most of this grip advantage to slice past Winterbottom and Whincup in quick succession and lead by lap three.

Davison then established a four-second cushion and managed to make his softs last until half-distance, as all his rivals did with their hard rubber. Whincup was able to close in once he had switched to softs in the pitstops, but Davison had enough in hand to win by 2.9s.

Winterbottom briefly challenged Whincup after the pitstops before falling away in third.

A late surge from Fabian Coulthard saw the Brad Jones Holden driver charge to fourth, passing Lee Holdsworth's Stone Brothers Ford late on.

Craig Lowndes took the second Triple Eight car from 14th on the grid to sixth, just ahead of Stone Brothers' Tim Slade, while Jason Bright (Brad Jones Racing) faded from fifth to eighth in the closing stages.

David Reynolds shrugged off a jump-start penalty to take ninth in FPR's third entry. Garth Tander charged up from 20th on the grid to complete the top 10 for the Holden Racing Team.
