Mostert takes blame for Bathurst Supercars team-mate shunt

Chaz Mostert has accepted responsibility for the crash between himself and Tickford team-mate Cam Waters that ruled the pair out of Supercars' Bathurst 1000

The Tickford drivers were running third and fourth in the closing stages of the Bathurst race when Mostert went too deep into The Chase complex as Waters moved to the inside, leading them to make contact and leaving them both in the sand.

Mostert then finished 16th after a drivethrough penalty for the incident and Waters was 21st and last, 13 laps down on winners Scott McLaughlin and Alexandre Premat.

It was the third Bathurst 1000 in a row that Tickford's respective entries have clashed and it follows on from a similar team-mate tangle between Mostert and Waters in New Zealand last month.

Mostert apologised to both Waters and the team for the latest run-in.

"Obviously I'm shattered," he said.

"It's the biggest race of the year, the event we look forward to most and the race we want to win most.

"It was so tight up front all day, we were just setting up for the last stint, had a good run on Cam, and just got crossed up and we hit.

"I didn't need to pass him, shouldn't have tried, and it ruined both our races which is the worst part.

"I'm really sorry to Cam and the whole team, we should be celebrating a podium or two right now, but we're empty-handed."

Waters said he was "absolutely gutted", adding: "It's just shit.

"We were trucking along for a podium, we were fuel-saving and Chazzy was obviously trying to race me to pass me, he was meant to be fuel-saving and I don't know, he's just made a mistake.

"I don't know what to say, the car was fast, we should have been on the podium."

Waters was later asked what he would say to Mostert after the race, and he said: "It's a common occurrence between us.

"It's just shit, it's shit for the team. They put in so many hours and deserve so much better than that.

"We should have been up there with one car, maybe two on the podium today and we've ended up both in the dirt."

Lee Holdsworth and Thomas Randle ended up Tickford's top finisher by taking 10th.
